Engagement Rate Calculator
Work out the engagement rate of an Instagram, TikTok or any social account, by followers or by views. Brands use this number to judge whether an audience is active.
Calculate engagement rate
How engagement rate is calculated
- By followers (common for Instagram): (likes + comments + shares + saves) ÷ number of posts ÷ followers × 100.
- By views (common for TikTok and Reels): (likes + comments + shares + saves) ÷ views × 100.
Use the same method when you compare accounts. Rates by views usually come out higher than rates by followers, so the two are not comparable.
What is a good engagement rate?
There is no official benchmark, and rates fall as accounts grow. As a rough guide many marketers use for Instagram by followers: under 1% is low, 1–3% is typical, and above 3% is strong. TikTok rates by views are often several times higher.
To lift engagement on a specific post, start with the basics: a strong hook, a clear question in the caption and quick replies to comments.

Frequently asked questions
Do bought followers lower my engagement rate?
Yes. Followers that do not interact increase the denominator, so a rate by followers goes down. If engagement is the goal, likes and views on posts help more than followers.
Should I count saves and shares?
Yes when you have them (from Insights or Analytics). They are strong signals on both Instagram and TikTok.
